There is a condition which runs a rather benign course in women called endometriosis. To explain this condition, one needs to know about normal anatomy. Each organ is made of a specific type of tissue, and the uterus is made of different types of tissue. The inner lining has special characteristics, and this exact type of tissue in endometriosis finds its way to other areas of the pelvis. This causes problems which will be discussed such as endometriosis and pregnancy.
One treatment for endometriosis is to have it removed, and the second is to take medication which can reduce the amount of tissue. This is a benign disease, however, it has a tendency to recur. The most common symptoms of this disease are chronic pelvic pain and infertility. It is diagnosed usually from late 20's to mid-30's because the tissue is dependent on estrogen.
These women may be coming complaining that they are not able to become pregnant, and checking for endometriosis is very important. Some women who do become pregnant may say they have miscarried during the third trimester, and again, untreated endometriosis may be the culprit.
Those women who have tried to become pregnant without success or have had a history of miscarriages should make an appointment to see a specialist in fertility. They have come up with ways to monitor people during their pregnancy regarding the growth of abnormal tissue. Ways to help encourage impregnation will be discussed below.
Aside from the harm to a pregnancy this condition can cause, there are other types of complications that can occur. This is not normal tissue to be growing elsewhere in the pelvis, but growth within the vicinity of the ovaries can be very problematic. It can either cause rupture to the ovary or torsion of the ovarian vessels. This torsion will cause twisting of these vessels and complete blockage of blood flow. These are medical emergencies.
There are short-term and long-term goals to treating this disease, and the short-term goal would be to relieve the pain and fertility problems. The long-term goals would be to reduce the recurrence of this disease. The types of treatment available include medical and surgical treatment which will be discussed.
For those who have fertility problems, medications cannot be used because these medications reduce the amount of estrogen in the body. Estrogen is very important in supporting a healthy pregnancy. As said before, estrogen helps the growth of this tissue. The options on how this tissue should be removed needs to be discussed with an experienced gynecologist. Other possible choices for beginning a pregnancy are in vitro fertilization.
Endometriosis is a condition which is overall benign, but it does have associated complications which can cause major problems for women. There are treatments that are available which can significantly help patients. It is a problem which can cause infertility for a large percentage of women who have tried to become pregnant, but more serious problems are ovarian rupture or torsion. There is hope though.
